Carpeting was a luxury. Most people had their own space or their own office with a door on it to shut out noise or escape from the smoker next door. When we were young smoking was considered cool and part of our coming of age. Smokers and non-smokers lived in relative harmony somewhat desensitized to the smells and other intrusions to our natural environment.
